Когда речь идет о смерти от раны, от потери крови и пр., употребляется die from: умереть от потери крови – to die from loss of blood, умереть от ран – to die from wounds. Предлог by употребляется, когда речь идет о насильственной смерти: умереть насильственной смертью – to die by violence, умереть от руки убийцы – to die by the murderer's hand. Русское умереть из-за отсутствия чего-л.
